IT'S NOBODY'S FAULT BUT MINE

If I got hungry because I didn't have breakfast because I need to cram.
If I haven't finished reading because I spent too time on the internet.
If I didn't get that exemption on that freakin subject when everybody did.
If I fail to prepare for a quiz or recitation on a subject.

It's not that I'm not getting my head in the game
It's just that, I have too much distractions in my mind
There's watching movies, reading manga, clubbing every night and the like
And most of the time, I my mind is just preoccupied with food

So what happens now that I'm feeling that impending doom?
I pray to God that I made every right guess on the exam.
I ask the professors for bonuses and lower mean grade.
I wish to get more than I bargained for

I guess if I fail, it's nobody's fault but mine
So here comes the part where I rethink about what I have done
The part where guilt because I didn't exert enough effort to study
The part where anger is the only thing felt towards the professors

The professors did their job and I know it, but it's just me.
I come late to class even if I'm staying at a dormitory
And when I reach class, it's either I'm sleeping or playing on my tab
Rarely will you see me listening to the professor

I can't blame them for having that monotone voice
Or having that wordy and picture-less powerpoint
It's just me, I can't seem to be interested in what they're saying
And I end up on facebook, twitter, tumblr or any social media

I can't blame anyone. It's all on me.
And I can't tell my parents that I haven't been attending class
nor listening to every word from the lecturers
Lecturers provided more than enough

So I resort to every means I can think of
I tell my parents the professors don't give me good grades
I spend all night trying to perfect a mini note so I can cheat
I sleep and then wish for the best, even if I don't deserve it.

2014: Starting the Year of the Wooden Horse right

I have been in a great hiatus because of purely school work. I decided to concentrate more on my studies because it was one insane ride. And now that we have our finals this February, maybe I should let you know what had me motivated even when at times that I don't feel like getting up.

  1. GOD. Of course! No explanations needed. He has plans.
  2. I'm excited for my Junior Internship. I know that we'll be the lowest form of mammal in the hospital. and to quote Bailey, "You're interns, grunts, nobodies, bottom of the surgical food chain. You run labs, run orders, work every second night until you drop and don't complain."
  3. And the third on is of course GRADUATION which will still be on year 2015. But oh well, I'm just excited to see this.
Then again, we still have a lot to learn and there are still a lot of things to master. Well that's besides how to sleep with your mind awake, or how to eat while running orders. So I'm kinda sorry for not keeping up with my blog. By the way, my blog is like my own kind of diary that I'm just sharing to the world. Thanks for dropping by! ;)

LIBRARY SCENARIO

2nd year students reviewing some imaging studies and yes it is their hellweek this week. We had ours last week.

Jose: how would you differentiate T1 and T2
Lito: don't forget the T2 flare
Jose: how would they expect us to answer that?
Arturo: will power *insert determined face here*

I have been scared...

I have been scared a lot of time. Some of them because of unreasonable things like cockroaches and ghosts, but most of the time I've been scared of failing. When I was in college, I mean undergraduate (Nursing), I have been scared of Anatomy because I rarely pass quizzes I barely make it to the passing grade during exams and I'm really finding it hard to memorize. I think maybe because all of this are too NEW for my brain to ingest.

I don't know why the basics always hit me as hard as always. I was so scared of failing that time, I would always go to the chapel and pray. Thank God, I made it through. This time, med-school is also giving me a hard time. This time I have an idea why. I think I'm burned out. Like this dog right here!
Maybe I need a rest, or a vacation or just a long sleep and a massage. OMG! I'm so inlove with my bed. How could I be torn from it. Almost every other week we have exams. A lot of them that resting for a weekend is a sin. I just can't. I need a push. Maybe time to give God a call.

CASE: Constant losing of balance

This case is rare and I just watched it on TV. Might as well, share it with you. The story of this is known worldwide because of the girl's literature.

CASE:
Patient was a high school sophomore, she plays basketball and a varsity in their college. One day, she fell on her face. No scratches on her arms or hands indicating her support to break the fall. After that incident, she they usually trips and falls on her knees. That made her mother worry and brought her to the hospital for a medical work up. The CT Scan revealed that the cerebellum was decreased in size than a normal individual her age. The doctor talked to the patient into writing a diary just so the doctor would know what happens with her when she's not in the hospital.

Within the next few months, her condition continued to deteriorate. First she began having trouble walking. Then she accidentally been choked on her own food. And then she had difficulty talking then breathing. She continued to write on her diary even if she had difficulty holding a pen. She was soon placed in a hospice care facility. After a few years, she spent lying on the bed until her breathing stopped.

Assessment?
Intervention?
Conclusion?

CASE: Low grade fever and Progressive weight loss

This case is presented to us less than a year ago. Loopholes are still there and a bunch of differential diagnoses are made.

I will be enumerating the important points here:
History of Present Illness:
  • easy fatigability on minimal activity
  • difficulty of breathing when doing household chores
  • enlarging lymph nodes in neck area
  • unproductive cough
  • intermittent low grade fever
  • progressive weight loss

CASE: Neonate with rolling of the eyeballs

I was hoping for the best and expecting the worst, but still got my heart broken when I heard the news.

CASE:
The patient was born (4 o'clock in the morning) healthy with an APGAR of 9 at home with the help of a hilot. The neonate was pink, more than 100 pulse, letting out a strong cry and active. After cutting the cord, the hilot injected something at the umbilical cord of the neonate telling the mother that it is for infection. No complications from both mother and baby was noted within the first few hours after delivery.

CASE: 96 years old woman, previously healthy

I'll be starting doing case studies, just in case you can help me with these. There will be a lot of loopholes, not all of these cases have management and follow ups. Names are fictional and I will write any name that pops in my head. So the hospital and name of patients will be coincidental if it the same with a real place or person. Oh well, here it goes.

CASE:
Patient EG, 96 years old is a healthy woman living in the bario with her daughter's family. She usually plays with her granddaughter who is just 3 years old. They usually walk around the place and plays ball with him. She usually have vegetable and meat for meals. She has no known disease and was never hospitalized or been into an accident.

It all ends here...

As science have taught us, to always cling to cold hard facts. Use every possible theory that has been appraised through evidence based data. All things have a molecular explanation, all thing can be explained by the book. If it can't be explained, people will try to find other subjects to support an idea. That's how we, health professionals, are brought up. When you die, that's the end of it. No pulse, no breathing. Just a cold hard empty body. Then it will soon decay and all that's left will be bones.

On the other side of death, there is faith. There is religion and there is an almighty power over us that gets us through life. GOD. Yes, I do believe in Him. He works miracles, when you can't talk to anyone about your problems, He's the one to talk to. It is with Him, our souls go to after our life here on earth. We live in heaven for that's what He had promised through the proclamation of His son Jesus.

PROMOTION LIST

Just like last year, we have to wait for almost 1 week to know if we are promoted for next year's enrollment. Last year, I was quite confident in almost all my subject (EXCEPT BIOCHEM, I barely made it to 75 last year!) because I was exempted at some of the subjects like Anatomy, Physiology, Community Medicine and I have forgotten the others. Believe it or not, I was not exempted at Bioethics. Why? It is because I have taken for granted that subject. I should have made extra effort on that so I will not be taking the finals, but oh well. What's done is done.

And NOW, for the moment of truth.
And yes! I'm promoted to third year! I am speechless because I really did have a hard time during this year ang my grades aren't that great. I'm still hoping to be approved on scholarship but I'd never be mad if I didn't get in. Gaaaah! Thank you Lord! Time to P-A-R-T-E-Y-Y-Y-Y-Y!!

SYMBIOSIS

Today I'll be talking about SYMBIOSIS, as defined in Wikipedia as a close and often long-term interaction between 2 or more different biological species.    Some symbiotic relationships are obligate, this means that species involved are entirely dependent on each other for survival. Other relationships are facultative, meaning that they can live without the other organism. I have read that in the year 1877, the word symbiosis was used to describe the relationship of people living together in a society. And because of that, I'll be applying this concept on everyday med-school life. The 2 biological interaction like Mutualism, Commensalism and Parasitic  can be clearly depicted on this group of people. I know wanna know more, read on!!!

Dealing with a GUNNER

In a class or in a small group there is always a GUNNER present. So let's define what a gunner is (as defined by the urban dictionary)
  • A person who is competitive, overly-ambitious & substantially exceeds minimum requirements.
  • Typically a medical student
  • A person who raises their hand after every question asked by their professor, regardless of if they know the correct answer or not.
  • They like to hear themselves speak
  • They use complicated words to make themselves sound smart
  • "They are trying to intimidate you & eliminate competition"
Wow, the urban dictionary is really precise at these kinds of things. Sa tagalog, sila yung mga bibo kid na sagot ng sagot. Tipong pabida lagi. Just being concrete here, I just literally translated the definition. Whenever a gunner opens its mouth almost all the people within the vicinity (sometimes including the professor) will have some absence seizure and be like:
So there are 2 ways to deal with a gunner. If you wanna know more, keep on reading this crappy post. -,-

QUIA memories

I remember the day when our professors decided to give huge amount of extra points when you get to finish quia, so you guessed it right. Kinarir ko ang quia na kahit madaling araw eh ginagawa ko, matapos lang at magka extra points!! It gets me pissed sometimes because whenever I'm at the middle of a long quiz (like GIT), the internet decides to slow down and eventually die.
And I feel like:
QUIA is an online quiz about anatomy and histology, so you really need a good (uninterrupted & fast) internet connection to be able to accomplish this on time. I decided to talk about this because I heard some 1st year med students talking about trying to finish 1 quia. And may I quote a friend of mine who also heard them, he said "Been there, done that." Gawd! Buti na lang natapos ko yun. Grabehan lang talaga,..
SA NGALAN NG PLUS POINTS!!!

Before January Ends

The first month of 2013 has been good to me and I think it'll be better for everyone of us. Well, I am born in the year of the snake and this year is the year of the water snake. I saw TV shows that say that the year of the snake is not always a good year. In feng shui, the 2 opposing elements of fire & water is at work during the year of the snake. These signs are meant to guide us & not control our lives. Remember that only God knows how our lives go and only us can control what will happen.
We will be your future doctors. We will try our best to serve in the most excellent way we can. TMC, Team Medical Coconut. Derived from the comics Team Medical Dragon. Changed in Coconuts because we are Filipinos. And let's not forget the birthday celebrant of the month, JAY!!
As the saying say:
Expect the WORST, Hope for the BEST!!!

I had 3 days of good sleep

Oh wow! Nothing can be more relaxing than 3days of non-stop, mind blowing, eyes puffing, skin wrinkling (I'm just saying random stuff here) SLEEP!!! OMG!!! I love having events that last for more than a day. During my undergrad years, we have this CNM days where there is MAD fest, talent night, club presentation (like Tics & Tremors, Arte etc), Coronation night, Battle of the bands, Sayawan, Cheerleading competition, relay games and sportsfest that'll make you want to attend starting 8am-12MN. It's like you don't wanna miss a single day because there is a lot of going on. Sometimes you have to choose the event because they all happen at the same time. An example is that there is a basketball game while there is an elimination for the dance competition. HOW DO YOU FREAKIN CHOOSE?!

We also had events this week. What can I say? Uhmm...  Nothing much happened, it's more like having a 3-days lecture-free. I've also been hearing comments about this event and I'd rather not state the obvious. I compliment the officers who made this possible, but I still don't like that muffet.

Oh well, I enjoyed the Amazing Race because I found a map. Some of my friends haven't got a map even though the organizers hid 21 maps which is enough for 21 teams.  They told us that they have search the place for a whole hour and no other maps are seen. So what happened? The teams are from different colleges;3 Undergraduate, Post graduate and other College Departments. I just hope that they would have played because I know it'll be fun beides they also paid the registration fee. Anyway, we got some running man logos and I'm good with it.

We also got switched with another team's score sheet. Ok it's our fault we haven't placed our team name on the sheet but the other team haven't written their team's name also. We know we got the other team's score sheet because we got 10bonus points on a dice game in which the marshall told us we were the first one to get it. At the end of the race, we tried to look for our score sheet with the organizers. Too bad we didn't find our score sheet on the pile of those team who submitted their score sheet. I wonder where did our score sheet go. Pinangpunas na lang siguro yun ng pawis. Oh, our team managed to be in the fourth place. With only 4 points from the third place winner. THAT MADE ME FEEL GLAD!!! ;))

Random, they have this secret attendance for plus points on a certain subject in which onlya few people know of. Wow! How cool is that? I have been there these past 3days and I haven't got any news like that. Swift move.

Overall, I got 3days of good sleep before we have another exam on Monday (Pediatrics) and Pathology practicals on Thursday.
IGNORANCE IS BLISS

Costume Committee

Last year, I have joined the production team of our batch during an event. It's where you have to learn a choreography of song and perform it. Yup, on stage performers. I decided to play a small part since we have plus points for that. I'm quite glad I'm part of it. Anyway, Agatha and I decided to help with the other songs. Choreography with a pop ballroom. How on earth will you manage that? Our head wanted to have a ballroom seen where the prince will be introduced with the princesses. "Kutilyon" WOW! I remember my JS prom. I suggested we try the "Way you make me feel" by the STEPS. I love that group, 90's baby of course. If you haven't seen them you can search their channel on Youtube. Moving on, we practically made it possible for almost 5days preparation. I'M SO PROUD OF THE DANCERS THAT TIME BECAUSE THEY HAVE EXECUTED EVERY STEP WITH THE BEAT AND COUNTING. The stage fright was another risk factor but I'm still glad how it turned out to be just fine. Here's a video of that dance, thank you Agatha for making the steps bearable for our dancers. Wouldn't made it until the end kung ako lang, kasi nakakabaliw maging exacting choreographer.

1st WAVE for the 2nd Semester

Oh yeah! The first wave will always seems to be the best one there is. Why? Let me state some reasons why I think the 1st wave of exams are bearable.

  1. Your mind is fresh from vacation
  2. You don't feel burn out
  3. You have nights of GREAT (not just good) sleep
  4. You have been living caffeine free
  5. You are more prepared
Hmmmm.. I need to be studying right now. While in the mean time, I'm backing up my files from multiply since they will be shutting down the section where we keep the photos and blog posts. Anyway, do you have tons of files from there like me?

Do they really check this?

Did you know that we have to pass almost a hundred pages full of answered pathology related questions in this manual? I mean, all of us. We are 275 second year students and I doubt that our professors will check all of them. Actually, I'm not the only one wondering. My friends too! And they truly believe that they wouldn't be checking our manuals and reading all of our answers so one of us wrote this.
di ko maipaliwanag... That is a line from the song "Gayuma" by Abra. You should watch this cute video. Madami na ang nagagayuma ngayon, pwede na din siguro natin sabihin na siguro nga minahal niya ang isang tao dahil sa kanyang personalidad. But this song? DAYMN!!! Anyway, I'm just pointing out that I love answering this manual *sarcasm*... This is how I learn things. Thank you so much for reading and till next time! ;)

100k for What?!

First semester had ended and second semester just around the corner. I sound like I'm announcing the coming of a holiday, well this second semester might be a holiday: HALLOWEEN!!! Just take a look at the subjects we will be getting. Are you ready?
1. Bioethics II -seriously?
2. Community Medicine II -I'm deeply hoping our thesis will turn out ok
3. Microbiology -nothing beats Malassezia Furfur! Is that even correct?
4. Internal Medicine -what could be more interesting than a migraine without pain? I guess seizure without aura would suffice.
5. OB-Gynecology -vajayjay on the way!
6. Pathology -are your ovaries in the right place now?
7. Physical Diagnosis -I've been doing this for like forever!!! err
8. Pediatrics -so embryology, we meet again
9. Pharmacology -I didn't like you when I was in nursing, you almost got me kicked out of the program! I hate you.
10.Psychiatry -I wonder why it's hard for them to explain it in real life situation than our nursing reviewers
11.Surgery -all for the glory of McDreamy and McSteamy

And can you please note the Affiliation Fee that we still don't need because we are not even exposed to real patients, less exposed to other hospital. Can someone explain this to me? And athletics, PRISAA! Is that even necessary? I haven't even been to animo center lately. Insurance for what? My classmates who are rushed to the Emergency Room still have to pay just to get medical attention. INTERNET FEE?!?!!? How can we even maximize internet fee if our new med building doesn't have internet connection. Crazy huh? Unless someone explain this to me or I'll just continuously rant.

MixWell Cafe

As a med student, I have to keep awake even in the wee hours of the morning just to study. It is typical for a med student to be addicted to caffeine, it's actually their best buddy. Why? Caffeine keeps you awake. That's why when doing an EEG / electroencephalogram (a test which uses some electrodes attached to your scalp to monitor your brainwaves) we avoid giving the patient coffee or cola or chocolate or even coffee flavored biscuits. These substances keep the patient awake, in EEG we need the patient to be asleep in order to monitor for abnormal brainwaves. Well, enough of that medical talk, here's the product I'm introducing you.
